Army To Include AOM for Pain Treatment
[from Acupuncture Today, July 21, 2010]

The statistics are sobering, to say the least. According to leading pain specialists in the Veterans Administration, nine in 10 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans return home with some form of pain, and 60 percent have significant pain.1 Now, a recent announcement by top Army officials may help address this situation and provide our modern military forces with ancient forms of healing to help with pain relief.

On June 25, the Army Surgeon General, Lt. Gen. Eric B. Schoomaker, announced the release of a report by the Pain Management Task Force, which has 109 recommendations for changes in the way Army personnel are treated for pain. Among those recommendations are the inclusion of complementary and alternative treatments such as acupuncture, meditation, biofeedback and yoga.

Study Supports Acupuncture Effects In Pain Control
The scientific validity of traditional Chinese medicine for pain treatment of pain received a nod of support in the May issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS).

Dr. Philip Lang and colleagues of the University of Munich used quantitative sensory testing to identify changes in pain sensitivity with acupuncture in 24 healthy volunteers. After applying acupuncture to the leg, the researchers found that pain thresholds increased by up to 50 percent. Effects were noted in both the treated leg and the untreated (contralateral) leg.

Acupuncture has been around for over 5,000 years now. There has to be something to it, don't you think?

Most people, when they think of acupuncture, can only picture needles being inserted into their bodies and nothing but pain being inflicted. Needles are, of course, inserted. That is what is all about, but there is no pain involved in the procedure.

First, the needles are very, very, very small. They do not inflict any pain when they are inserted. An accomplished acupuncturist can insert needles and the patient will not feel even the tiniest twinge of pain.

As the needles are inserted, they are spinning rapidly, and because they are so very fine, there is simply no pain at all.

The object of the acupuncturist is to restore the balance of Qi (pronounced "chee") in the patient who is suffering from back pain. Once the Qi is balanced, the forces of Yin and Yang are also balanced.

The balance of Qi and Yin and Yang will do away with all pain in the body. When the body is balanced, pain cannot exist.

Acupuncture is described by those who practice Western medicine as alternative medicine. But since has been around several thousand years longer than Western medicine, maybe Western medicine is the alternative medicine.

People have suffered from back pain probably since the dawn of time. It is second only to the common cold as reasons given for absences from work in today's modern world, as it most likely has been for many previous centuries.

Acupuncture has proven many times to many people over many years that it can and does work to relieve back pain.

The key to using to relieve back pain is in finding an acupuncturist who is experienced and who has had success with other patients.
